Dublin manager Jim Gavin says he is pleased with the early showings of his defence as the 2015 campaign gets going.

Gavin named an experimental lineup for the win over Maynooth at Parnell Park and saw the team concede 1-5 in a seven point victory.

"I thought defensively, we were very solid. John Small played very well at 6. He's not available now because he has exams in the week. So one or two won't be available because of that. Obviously at this time of the year, academics are the most important thing for these players, not football," said Gavin.

"[Small] put in a big display and he certainly commanded that position very well, so it was good to see the defensive system was solid.
