Southampton and Manchester United have played out a 0-0 draw in their Premier League clash on Thursday night at St Mary's.

The result wasn't going to have any bearing on United's Champions League hopes as they were already out of range of the Top Four prior to kick off and are pinning their hopes on winning the Europa League final against Ajax next Thursday which would come with the carrot of a place in Europe's elite club competition.

United could have fallen behind early on when they conceded a penalty but the previously in form Italian striker Manolo Gabbiadini saw his spot kick saved by Argentina international goalkeeper Sergio Romero.

The former Napoli forward became the second Southampton forward to miss a penalty in as many games, following Shane Long's missed effort at the weekend in a 2-1 win over Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium on Saturday.

The 0-0 draw means United still stay sixth, six points off fifth placed Arsenal with just three points left to play for, while Southampton are eighth, a full 15 points behind seventh placed Everton.

United will host Crystal Palace on the final day of the season this Sunday while Southampton will welcome Stoke City to St Mary's in their final game.
