The GAA is to spend this weekend reviewing its plans for a return of activity. 

It follows the Government announcement that contact sports can resume a phase early on June 29.

The GAA's Safe Return to Gaelic Games document, released in early June, precluded collective training from taking place until July 20.

It's believed that the association were aware of the Government's intention to bring forward an easing of restrictions ahead of Friday evening's announcement.

It's now expected that they'll will speed-up a return to gaelic games activity across the board.

Club competitions are due to resume on July 31, running until October 11.

The association, meanwhile, has welcomed news of the Government's €70million funding package for Irish sport.

€40million of that will be collectively made available to the GAA, the FAI and the IRFU.

The GAA say that money "will greatly assist our units in the weeks and months ahead".

Earlier in the day, the LGFA announced their intention to run a seven-week All Ireland Ladies Football Championship.

The GAA are in the process of formulating how best to run the All Ireland Football and Hurling championships, which are not due to begin until October 17.

The GAA will review over the weekend its plans for a return to activity following today’s government announcement.

It is expected that the GAA’s Advisory Committee will be able to advance its plans for a return to activity and various options will be considered at its next meeting, after which an update will be provided.

The GAA would also like to place on record its gratitude to the Government for the support package announced this evening.

This funding will greatly assist our units in the weeks and months ahead as they prepare for a return to activity.
