First Division side Shelbourne have pulled off a coup with the signing of former Irish international Stephen Elliott.

The Drumcondra side currently lie in sixth place in the First Division with seven points from six games. The 32-year-old signs with Shels until the end of the season.

Elliott began his senior career at Manchester City before spells with numerous teams including Sunderland, where he helped the team get promoted to the Premier League twice, and Hearts, with whom he helped win the Scottish Cup.

The former Carlisle United player ruptured his achilles tendon playing for the League Two side in October 2014. He has struggled to find a team since then despite training with Shamrock Rovers in pre-season.

Elliott's only goal for Ireland came against Cyprus in a 2006 World Cup qualifier in 2005 during a 1-0 win in Nicosia.

Shelbourne travel to Waterford on Friday evening in the First Division. Elliott may make his debut on Monday night against local rivals Bohemians in the EA Sports Cup.
