Roger Federer has been knocked out of this year's French Open.

The men's second-seed was beaten in straight sets in his quarter-final against fellow Swiss, Stanislas Wawrinka.

The 6-4 6-3 7-6 (7-4) result meant Wawrinka overcame Federer in a Grand Slam head-to-head for the firs time in five attempts.

Play had been suspended during that match after a sheet of metal crashed down onto fans.

It was part of a video screen structure which flew into the crowd amid high winds, leaving the match to be called off for around 30 minutes.

It is understood that at least one spectator was injured.

Meanwhile, men's 5th seed Kay Nishikori is tied on two sets each against home favourite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
