"Well, I'd have a thing about West of the Shannon, irrespective of hurling - life in general. We've as good of people on the Western sea front as anywhere. But we're very slow to say it or do it."

That was Galway's legendary ex-hurling manager Cyril Farrell on Off The Ball tonight at the Roisin Dubh in Galway city on a panel alongside former Galway All-Ireland winner Noel Lane and former team-mate Eanna Ryan.

Farrell was chatting about the mindset before he first led the county to All-Ireland glory in 1988 and how he tried to build a positive mentality among Galway's hurlers.

"New lads going on have no baggage but for older fellas, it gets harder to do it," he said, referring to a batch of players who had hurled for over a decade before winning an All-Ireland, while he also had players involved for just a few months before they shared in that Liam McCarthy Cup glory.
