The FAI have confirmed that they are backing Aleksander Ceferin's bid to become the next president of UEFA.

The Slovenian, who has been head of his country's football association since 2011, is one of the favourites to succeed former UEFA president Michel Platini, who has been banned from all football-related activities for four years.

The election for UEFA President will take place in Athens, Greece on September 14th.

Ángel María Villar of Spain is the current acting president.

In a statement, FAI chief executive John Delaney says that Ceferin is the preferred candidate for the FAI to take over European football's governing body.

"I have seen first hand the great work that Aleksander has done for football and we have been very impressed with him so far," said Delaney.

"I believe that he has all the attributes to bring and create the perfect balance to bring UEFA forward.

"He has been a very progressive and extremely innovative leader in his native Slovenia and his successful candidacy would be a very positive move for European football and the administration as a whole."
