The FA has confirmed Kieran Gibbs will be able to appeal his red card on the grounds of “mistaken identity”.
Gibbs was sent off in bizarre circumstances during this afternoon’s Premier League tie with Chelsea. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain handled the ball on the Arsenal line but referee Andrew Marriner showed the resulting red card to Gibbs rather than his Arsenal teammate. Marriner stuck to his decision despite Chamberlain and the Arsenal players telling him he had the wrong man.
Chelsea went on to win the game 6-0.
The FA responded to the incident via its Twitter account, saying clubs cna appeal red card decisions based on mistaken identity.
Clubs can appeal mistaken identity to The @FA, although The @FA can pro-actively review also. 1/2
