The 2017 Players' Championship looks set to go down to the wire with the top thirteen players separated by only six shots heading into the final round.

Sawgrass was designed to induce drama and, with its difficult closing three holes, that is exactly what can be expected on Sunday.

J.B. Holmes took the less traditional route to the top of the leaderboard on Saturday as he struggled off the tee for most of his third round.

He shares the lead with Kyle Stanley on nine-under-par while South Africa's Louis Oosthuizen sits a further shot back.

“Around this golf course, with 16, 17 and 18, anything can happen,” said Oosthuizen, ahead of the final round. “No lead can be big enough. You can be three back and you can win the event.

"That’s what makes this golf course great. We’ve seen over the years great finishes around this golf course and horrible finishes,” he added.

Masters' champion and former winner of The Players, Sergio Garcia, is within striking distance on five-under alongside Patrick Cantlay and Alex Noren.

Rory McIlroy struggled to make any impact on Saturday as he struggled with a back injury and carded a 71 to sit eight shots back while Graeme McDowell posted 74 to take him out to one-over for his first three rounds.
