Donald Trump once said that “sometimes by losing a battle you find a new way to win the war”. In the past year, Olympic sailor Annalise Murphy has learnt that lesson better than most. In her crucial medal race at the 2012 Olympic Games, she finished in fourth place, despite hitting her personal best and was denied a place on the podium.

But on Friday afternoon in Dun Laoghaire there were scenes of jubilation as Annalise became the new European champion in the laser radial class and made up for her Olympic heartbreak as she secured European gold. It was a major boost to her Olympic campaign for Rio 2016.
