Chelsea were hanging on at the end of today’s home tie with Crystal Palace, but did just enough to take the 2-1 win and put a halt of to Palace’s winning streak.
Fernando Torres opened the scoring after 16 minutes, before Marouane Chamakh scored for the third game in a row when he levelled it up on 29 minutes. Ramires was the match winner for Chelsea on 39 minutes when he shot from the edge of the area.
Palace pushed hard to get the equaliser and were well worth a draw, narrowly missing out on the goal on several occasions. Ultimately Jose Mourinho and Chelsea were breathing a sigh of relief as the final whistle went and they moved up to second in the table, just 2 points off Arsenal.
Everton’s rise continued today, unabated all but for a Dimitar Berbatov penalty that momentarily had Fulham level at Goodison Park.
The Toffees went ahead when Leon Osman scored on 18 minutes, and held the lead until Berbatov scored from the spot on 67 minutes. Roberto Martinez’s side have made themselves at home amongst the league’s top sides thus far this season and that level of performance shone through as they went on to score three times in the final 20 minutes.
Seamus Coleamn finished off a swift, precise move to make it 2-1 before Gareth Barry and Kevin Mirallas added on the insurance of another two goals in the final few minutes of the game. Everton now move to fourth in the table, leapfrogging Liverpool.
Cardiff took a big step away from the relegation zone with a 1-0 win over fellow strugglers West Brom. Peter Whitingham scored after 65 minutes to give Cardiff the 3 points.
Newcastle and Southampton played out a 1-1 draw. Yoan Gouffran put Newcastle ahead midway through the first half but Jay Rodgriguez levelled the game on 65 minutes.
West Ham and Sunderland drew 0-0 at Upton Park.
