World number one Dustin Johnson has withdrawn for the Shell Houston Open this week, a day after winning the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play.

He consolidated his position as the best golfer in the world with a one hole win over Jon Rahm in the final on Sunday.

Johnson was in fine form all week and never trailed in any match he played in the competition.

He has withdrawn from Houston citing fatigue as he prepares for the first major of the year: the US Masters at Augusta.

Johnson released the following statement: “After a great deal of thought and consultation with my team, I have decided to withdraw from this week's Shell Houston Open. Having played seven rounds of competitive golf in the last five days, I feel it is best to give my mind and body a much-needed rest heading into Masters week.

"I sincerely apologize to my many friends and fans in Houston, and especially everyone at Shell. The Shell Houston Open is one of the premier events on the PGA TOUR and I look forward to returning in the coming years."
