Dublin City Council has confirmed it is buying Dalymount Park from Bohemians for €3.8m.
The football club will stay on at the stadium as part of the redevelopment of the grounds as a sports centre. The money will be used by Bohemians to pay off debts owed to Zurich Bank.
Negotiations have been continuing for three years, and once include plans to have Shelbourne FC move to Dalymount from Toka Park to share a pitch with their rivals. However, difficulties with lease-holder Jerry O'Reilly and fan opposition made this impossible.
The ground holds a special place in Irish football history, having hosted FAI cup finals and international fixtures between 1924 and 1990. Liam Brady, Johnny Giles and Denis Irwin all made their international debuts in the stadium.
