Rory Gallagher's Donegal side have been given a major boost ahead of the 2016 National League campaign with the news that midfielder Rory Kavanagh is to come out of inter-country retirement.

The 33-year-old last played for Donegal in the 2014 All-Ireland Final and was part of the team that defeated Mayo in the Final two years previously. He announced his retirement from the inter-county game a year ago this Friday.

Kavanagh has continued to play club football in Donegal in the past 12 months. He was part of the St. Eunan's side that lost the Donegal County Final by a point to Naomh Conaill in October.

Donegal begin their National League campaign away to Down at the end of this month on January 30th. Kavanagh told the Donegal Sports Hub that he is scheduling his training to return to the squad for that game.
