Dillon Danis has vowed to improve and make his detractors eat their words after his razor-thin loss to Jake Shields at the weekend.

The pair faced off in a no-gi jiu-jitsu contest at Submission Underground 4 in Portland on Saturday night.

Danis has recently joined UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor's training camps while Shields is a long-time friend of McGregor foe, Nate Diaz.

McGregor and Diaz are currently 1-1 with the much-anticipated rubber match due to take place within the next twelve months.

Danis is a BJJ black-belt under famed coach and practitioner Marcelo Garcia while Shields is a specialist in American jiu-jitsu.

The pair were level at the end of the bout and it took three rounds of overtime to separate them with Shields winning via faster escape by eight seconds.

Danis released this statement following the loss: “I show up to any rule set- Gi or No Gi and will take my losses like a man. Jake survived a 10 min onslaught of my submissions to beat me in the overtime round by 8 seconds for fastest escape, fair play to him he is a legend.

"I still believe in myself 100% and this will not define me. You will all swallow your words keep basking in a other mans struggles i'll remember everything.”

The American is due to make his professional MMA debut with Bellator later this year.
