Formula 1 driver Jules Bianchi has suffered a diffuse axonal injury according to his team, Marussia.
It is a traumatic brain injury, and the 25-year-old remains in a critical but stable condition after the accident at the Japanese Grand Prix on Sunday.
A diffuse axonal brain injury is a common form of traumatic brain injury. About 90 per cent of those who suffer that form of injury do not regain consciousness, with 10 per cent often suffering a form of impairment.
Bianchi's car aquaplaned at Turn 7 at Suzuka before colliding with a tractor removing another car from the track.
Footage of the crash has appeared on social media and shows the speed and severity of the collision with the tractor.
The 25-year-old Frenchman was unconscious when he was taken to hospital, prior to surgery.
