In the opening round of the British Open, Rory McIlroy carded a 6-under 66 and leads the tournament by one stroke over Matteo Manassero's 5-under.
McIlroy has been playing well all season and opened the Scottish Open last week with a course-record 64.
If McIlroy can figure out how to keep this second round under control he should be in a strong position heading to the weekend at Hoylake.
After a double bogey, Woods made five birdies in his final eight holes for a 3-under 69 in the first round. It's not the 67 he shot in the opening round of the 2006 British Open at Hoylake but still impressive after a five month absence.
Sergio Garcia made out with three birdies in his first five holes and shot a strong 68 in the first round of the Open. World No. 1 Adam Scott will join Garcia, Jim Furyk and Brooks Koepka tied for third at 4-under.
Defending champion Phil Mickelson comes out of the opening round with a 2-over 74 after bogeying the 18th hole.
