Republic of Ireland striker David McGoldrick has been ruled out of the upcoming Nations League games against Wales and Finland.

The Sheffield United attacker has suffered an adductor injury while James McCarthy is a major doubt for tomorrow's clash with Wales with the hamstring issue he pickled up in Thursday's match against Slovakia.

"James McCarthy is not too bad, but we'll have to wait and see how he is in relation to the proximity of the game tomorrow, so he's doubtful," said Stephen Kenny at his pre-match press conference.

"But he hasn't suffered any tear or anything like that. The scan has been okay, there's good news on his scan."

“We have a lot to consider,” the Ireland boss said when asked if he's likely to make changes for tomorrow's game at the Aviva Stadium. “The players played 120 minutes but every international is very important and significant in the lives of the players, albeit there is not a full house with the current situation.

“Some think that dilutes the importance of it but it shouldn't. It still should be an occasion within itself and all the players are proud to play for Ireland. They are all hurting at the moment after losing the other night. It's a huge disappointment because the players were excellent.”

Kenny was also asked about the circumstances around Aaron Connolly and Adam Idah being ruled out due to COVID-19 restriction breaches.

“I'm very disappointed about that. Aaron was selected in the team and Adam would have been a good attacking option.

“To find out on match day and then the bit of a saga with the possibility of an appeal, it wasn’t good preparation.

"What happens in-house should sort of remain in-house. Realistically, the person...It was a non-essential football member in terms of a crisis situation that travelled.

“That is something that we have to live with.”
