Former Ireland striker David McGoldrick insists Sheffield United will continue to battle in their bid to stay in the Premier League.

The veteran attacker's first-half goal was enough for the league's bottom side to record just their fourth victory of the campaign with a 1-0 win against Aston Villa last night.

The Blades are still 12 points adrift of safety with only 11 games left to play but McGoldrick told BT Sport that he's hopeful they can put a run of form together in the coming weeks.

"It's pleasing. We needed it. I think we were starting from the last game at home, now we have three home games on the bounce so we wanted to get some points on the board and we knew it was going to be a tough game today and it got tougher when we went down to 10 men but we showed that we're fighting for this club."

United played the last twenty minutes of the game with 10 men following Phil Jagielka's red card and McGoldrick says his side showed character to earn the result.

"With 10 men against a good team, we had our backs against the wall for the last 20 minutes and it’s just pleasing to get the win.

"Massive character. We all care about the club, we all want wins.

"We all don’t want to be in this position in the table, we know where we lie but we’re all still fighting for our future and for this club and the saying is, 'it’s not over till the fat lady sings’ and we’re all fighting to the end."
