Last year, fans of cult 90s TV show Twin Peaks rejoiced when it was announced the programme would be returning for a new series, with original creators Mark Frost and David Lynch back on board. Kyle McLachlan is also set to reprise his role as Agent Dale Cooper, with other cast members also set to return.

There have been recent rumours the 'reboot' was in trouble, however, with some even suggesting the plug had been pulled entirely. David Lynch has taken to Twitter to dispel that particular rumour, but also announced he will no longer be taking part in the project.

The director writes that "Showtime did not pull the plug on Twin Peaks. After 1 year and 4 months of negotiations, I left because not enough money was offered to do the script the way I felt it needed to be done.

"This weekend I started to call actors to let them know I would not be directing. Twin Peaks may still be very much alive at Showtime. I love the world of Twin Peaks and wish things could have worked out differently," he added.

The news will be a major blow for many Twin Peaks fans, and many still credit a lot the show's strengths to Lynch's distinctive, surreal direction (especially with many still believing the latter half of the second season, with less involvement from the director, marked a significant step down in quality).

Lynch fans in general will also likely be disappointed, considering he has focused more on music, art and commercials since his last film - 2006's Inland Empire.

All might not be lost just yet, though. Showtime - the network behind the upcoming revival - said in a statement, "we were saddened to read David Lynch’s statement today since we believed we were working towards solutions with David and his reps on the few remaining deal points.

"Showtime also loves the world of Twin Peaks and we continue to hold out hope that we can bring it back in all its glory with both of its extraordinary creators, David Lynch and Mark Frost, at its helm," it adds.
