Ireland’s Dan Martin has taken a stage win at the Tour de France, winning today’s satge nine after a dramatic battle with Austria’s Jakob Fuglsang on the home stretch.

The two had opened up a significant gap from the rest of the field as they approached the line, side by side, Martin made the move, with his timing perfect, and sprinted past Fuglsang. The Garmin Sharp rider held on to his lead and crossed the line to become first Irishman to win a Tour stage since 1992 when his uncle, Stephen Roche, won stage 16.

The win moves Martin up to 8th overall.

Chris Froome retained the yellow jersey following a tough race that saw his Sky team experience difficulties early on and leave Froome with a lot to do.
