New Westmeath manager Tom Cribben admits he has yet to contact Dessie Dolan about a return to the maroon jersey.

The former Laois and Offaly boss oversaw his first game with the Lakemen yesterday and witnessed his side surrender a 0-5 to 0-4 half-time lead to neighbours Meath in their O’Byrne Cup opener.

It finished 1-13 to 0-10 in the visitors’ favour at Mullingar, with David Bray’s goal in the 55th minute establishing a six-point advantage which they held at full-time.

Former All Star Dolan announced his retirement from inter-county football last summer but his form with club side Garrycastle en route to the Leinster SFC semi-finals two months ago has sparked calls for a return to the Westmeath fold.

“We made no contact yet because he only finished in late November and he definitely needed a decent break to refresh,” said Cribben of the 35-year-old.

“We’ll see how he’s feeling ... then we’ll make a decision on that.”

Another veteran Westmeath forward, Denis Glennon, hobbled off injured in the first half and Cribben doubts his chances of making Wednesday’s clash with DCU at Kinnegad.
