Cork's Ciaran Sheehan is to stay in the AFL, after his club Carlton confirmed his was to remain as a Category B rookie.

Sheehan moved to Australia in November 2013, and signed for the Melbourne side the following January on a two-year deal. He earned the move to Australia after impressing in the 2013 International Rules series which Ireland won comprehensively.

An All-Ireland winner with Cork in 2010, Sheehan's involvement has been missed in Cork in recent years. He also won a Munster title and two National Leagues with the county.

The 26-year-old will be based with Carlton's affiliate team Northern Blues, as he looks to force his way back into the first-team squad.

He has struggled with injuries in recent years since moving to Australia, with his future unknown until Carlton revealed they had resigned him.

Sheehan is not the only Irish player on Carlton's books. Louth's Ciaran Byrne also plays for the club.
