Cork have knocked Kilkenny out of the All Ireland hurling championship with a 0-19 to 0-14 win at Semple Stadium.
Kilkenny were second best from the start and when they lost Henry Shefflin – dismissed for a second yellow card in the 34th minute – it was set to be their greatest test of the championship thus far. For once Brian Cody’s men could not meet the challenge laid down.
A penalty almost immediately after the restart gave Kilkenny the chance to drag themselves right back into the game but after the initial scored effort was ruled out – due to Tommy Walsh encroaching on the goal before the penalty was struck – a second effort was saved with three dramatic efforts of defence from Cork players. From there Jimmy Barry Murphy’s side never looked back and were it not for a late resurgence from Kilkenny the margin of defeat could have been far greater.
