Cork are set to play in Division 1B of the Allianz Hurling League in 2014, following confirmation from the GAA that the originally planned league system – decided on last December - will be in place for the start of the new season in February.

There were several proposals put forward at today’s Ard Chomhairle in Croke Park, but the decision to stick with the original system means there will once again be 6 sides in the top division – Dublin, Waterford, Kilkenny, Galway, Clare and Tipperary – with Cork and Limerick playing in the second tier.

The system will remain in place for three years, until 2016.

A statement from the GAA read:

Today’s meeting considered and voted on three separate proposals choosing first between the possibility of six or seven team divisions with a preference expressed for the former.

A second vote between the two six-team models saw the original structure defeat the proposal as put forward by Michael Burns recently.

The new arrangements will run for three years concurrently with the changes pending for the championships, which also come into effect next year, allowing for a full review of the two main hurling competitions in 2016.
