Nottingham Forest have parted company with manager Chris Hughton following a sixth defeat in seven Championship games on Wednesday.

Forest lost 2-0 at home to Middlesbrough, leaving them with just one point from their opening seven games in the second-tier of English football.

The former Republic of Ireland international took over at the start of last season when Sabri Lamouchi was sacked after Forest lost their first four league games.

He guided Forest to 17th place and leaves with an overall record of 14 wins from 53 games.

The pressure was mounting on Hughton after a string of disappointing results and some supporters vented their frustration at the club’s directors at the final whistle last night.

A club statement read: "Nottingham Forest can confirm that Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties as first-team manager.

"The club would like to place on record its’ appreciation for Chris’s efforts.

"Chris joined the club in a difficult period for everyone in football and around the world and we thank him for the way he has conducted himself during his tenure.

"Steven Reid will take temporary charge of the first team as interim head coach.

"The search for the permanent successor has begun and the club will update supporters in due course.

"The club would like to wish Chris all the best in his future career."

Former Ireland international Steven Reid has been placed in temporary charge and is expected to be in the dugout for  Saturday's trip to Huddersfield.

Former Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder had been linked with the role even before Hughton's sacking was confirmed.

The 53-year-old was also one of the names mentioned for the West Brom job earlier this year before the Championship side opted for Valerien Ismael.
