The MTN-Qhubeka rider finished the 178.5km route strongly and had enough left in reserve to power past the the duo along the Mende airstrip.

The day's 20 man escape group endured a grueling 3km ascent of the Cote de la Croix Neuve.

Cummings stayed in touch with Pinot and Bardet over the ascent and in the 2km flat, Cummings found another gear.

The 34-yea-old from Wirral finished the strongest and claimed a historic stage 14 win.
