Former Brazil player and coach Zico says he intends to run for the FIFA presidency.

The 62-year-old says he sees it as his "duty" to stand in the election, saying the corruption claims hitting the governing body are sad for the sport.

 "It's sad for our sport to see what is happening in football today," he said, citing current corruption allegations involving FIFA officals.

"I see it as my duty to use my experience and knowledge to try and stand for the presidency."

Current FIFA president Sepp Blatter will step aside after a successor is elected at the next FIFA congress which could take place as early as December.

Zico was part of Brazil's famed 1982 World Cup squad which dazzled but were defeated by eventual champions Italy.

He also played at the '78 and '86 tournaments, while the attacking midfielder represented Flamengo for most of his career, sandwiching a spell in Italy with Udinese, before finishing his time as a player in Japan with Kashima Antlers.

The Rio de Janeiro native has forged a career in management in his latter years, taking charge of Kashima Antlers, Turkish giants Fenerbahce, the Japan national team, CSKA Moscow and Olympiacos among many others.

He is currently the head coach at FC Goa in the Indian Super League.
