A member of Team Ireland's boxing delegation has allegedly failed a test for banned substances just days ahead of the start of the Olympics.

A report in The Irish Examiner broke the news that the results of a test which were issued in recent days before the team left for Brazil came back with a potential violation for one of the male boxers.

They also note that there has been no official confirmation of the positive test result from representatives with Sport Ireland or The Olympic Council of Ireland.

At this stage, there is no confirmation on what the potential ban could be, and whether or not the boxer concerned would be be forced to miss out on the Games, given how close the news comes to the start of the ceremony.

Speaking to Newstalk.com, a representative from Sport Ireland said: "Sport Ireland can’t comment on this matter, given the quasi-judicial nature of how the system is managed here.

"Sport Ireland has never commented on matters of this nature and will not be doing so in this instance."

Speaking to The Irish Times, a representative for the International Boxing Association, AIBA, said that they are "aware of the reports but declined to make any further comment."

Meanwhile, boxer Paddy Barnes has taken a combative stance on the matter, challenging The Irish Examiner to release the name.
