Both the Kerry and Donegal managers were summoned to the referee's dressing room during the half-time break of a National League encounter between their sides in which two red cards and two cards were distributed.

Management from both sides were issued warnings by referee Eddie Kinsella following a hostile opening 35 minutes which saw Donegal's Leo McCloone and Kerry forward Alan Fitzgerald, both sent to the line for striking. Meanwhile, Shane Enright and Denis Daly were shown black cards during that same period of their Division 1 clash in Tralee which Kerry went on to win by five points.

The Fitzgerald incident was particularly controversial as it left Donegal defender Neil McGee with a bloody nose, although footage captured during the game shows McGee grabbing the Kerry forward's hand at the outset of the exchange.

The result marked a first defeat for Donegal in this year's League, a result which manager Rory Gallagher said was disappointing given that they did not push on for the win after reversing a 0-07 0-02 half-time deficit.

“We are disappointed that we lost the game, having put ourselves in a great position at seven each, playing with a strong breeze; [disappointed] that Kerry showed more hunger; disappointed with our defending for the goal; disappointed with our discipline, got a couple of frees moved in.”
