Fabio Borini is the toast of Sunderland as he struck his first ever goal for the club in this afternoon’s Tyne-Wear derby.
The Italian struck from outside the area in the final few minutes to put Sunderland 2-1 up and send the Stadium of Light into ecstasy with a first win of the season and a derby win over Newcastle all at once.
The home side went ahead early on through Steven Fletcher, with the Scot climbing above Paul Dummet and heading home from a Sebastian Larsson cross in the fifth minute.
Newcastle were level through Mathieu Debuchy. The French full back capitalised on some very poor defending from Sunderland to sneak behind the line and slot the ball past Tim Krul.
There were six minutes left on the clock when Fabio Borini collected a pass from Jozy Altidore, took a touch and then drove the ball into the top corner from 25 yards out.
Newcastle were unable to claw the game back from there and after a tense four minutes of stoppage time Sunderland took their first win of the season.
