Belgian cyclist Daan Myngheer has died after suffering a heart attack in a race on the French island of Corsica.

The 22-year-old was competing in the Criterium International when he pulled out of the first stage, 30 kilometres from the finish line. The Belgian suffered the heart attack in the ambulance on the way to a hospital in the Corsican capital of Ajaccio.

Myngheer died on Monday night in hospital surrounded by his family. The death was the second in Belgian cycling in 24 hours. On Sunday, Antoine Demoitie died after being struck by a motorcycle during the Gent-Wevelgem race.
