Dundalk had to settle for a 1-0 defeat in their Champions League qualifying third round first leg clash at BATE Borisov.

The Belarusian side created the bulk of the chances on their home patch but could only beat in-form Dundalk goalkeeper Gary Rogers once.

It was a second half goal which saw Mikhail Gordeichuk fire past Rogers at his near post on 70 minutes after darting down the left channel.

Rogers made a string of excellent saves but also saw BATE hit the woodwork twice, including a header which rattled the crossbar in the final five minutes.

But Dundalk hung on and came closest on the break in the first half when Daryl Horgan got down the left and fed Robbie Benson whose low shot was saved.

Dundalk will now look to overturn the deficit in the home leg on August 2nd.
