A second-half hat-trick from Gareth Bale gave Tottenham a comfortable 4 - 0 win over an inexperienced Aston Villa side.

Spurs dominated a scoreless first half, but struck first just as Villa were applying some pressure.

A clever through ball from Tottenham left-back Kyle Naughton played in Jermain Defoe who finished smartly past Brad Guzan in the 57th minute.

From there on Paul Lambert's young charges collapsed as Bale took over.

The Welsh wingers first came when he burst through the Villa defence and rounded the goalkeeper.

He made it 3 - 0 fifteen minutes from time as he drilled home a fierce strike. And he made sure that he would be heading home with the match ball as he slotted in from a Gylfi Sigurdsson pass.

The win lifts Tottenham into fourth ahead of Everton on goal difference.

It is a different story for Villa who remain 16th, three points above the drop. And Lambert will be concerned that his team have now conceded 12 in two games without reply to follow on from their 8 - 0 defeat at the hands of Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.
