On Sunday evening, Athlone Town released a statement in which they called for an investigation by police and Interpol regarding match fixing allegations.

A widened investigation has been launched by the FAI into "irregular betting patterns" around some of the First Division club's fixtures this season.

That followed receipt of a report from European football's governing body UEFA.

To discuss the situation, Off The Ball were joined by Irish Times football journalist Emmet Malone and Irish Daily Mail soccer correspondent David Sneyd and they explained the background to the story and behind the scenes changes at the club before the start of the new season.

Discussing the issue, Malone said, "It does seem clear that both UEFA and the FAI were monitoring the club's results on an ongoing basis."
