Ben Affleck won both best dramatic film and director for his movie about a CIA mission to rescue diplomats in Tehran in 1979, while "Les Miserables" won best film, actor and supporting actress in the musical/comedy category.
As expected Daniel Day-Lewis won best actor for his portrayal of Abraham Lincoln, but that was the only top award for the movie which had topped the nominations tally with seven.
He was shortlisted alongside fellow Oscar candidates Denzel Washington and Joaquin Phoenix.
Former US President Bill Clinton presented the Wicklow resident with his award.
Other winners from the night
The night's most baffling speech at the Golden Globes in L.A overnight came from Jodie Foster, who accepted the Cecil B. DeMille Award for her long career.
She's only fifty, but has been in showbiz for 47 years.
Jodie doesn't talk about her sexuality, and teasingly made it seem as though she was about to come out of the closet.
She did manage to bring many of the audience to tears as she talked about her live for her son, partner and mother.
Jessica Chastain meanwhile won best actress in a drama for her role in "Zero Dark Thirty".
Adele thanked her newborn son and her boyfriend, Simon Konecki, as she triumphed at the Golden Globes.
She scooped Best Song for the James Bond theme, Skyfall - it was her first public appearance since giving birth in October.
The terrorism-themed thriller "Homeland" and Brooklyn hipster comedy "Girls" took top television honors at the awards.
"Homeland" won for best dramatic series, and gained best actress and best actor honors for its two stars, Claire Danes and Britain's Damian Lewis.
"Girls," took best comedy series as well as best actress for its 26-year-old creator and star Lena Dunham.
