A statue of AP McCoy has been unveiled at Cheltenham, hours before the start of the 2017 Festival.

McCoy, along with his wife Chanelle and children were on hand to see the unveiling on the life-size statue. It was designed by Irish sculptor Paul Ferriter.

Ferriter has already immortalised sportsmen in bronze. The Dublin-based artist has created bronze statues of the likes of Seve Ballesteros and Jack Nicklaus.

McCoy thanked Cheltenham Racecourse for creating the statue at it's unveiling. "I never thought at any stage when I was coming here that there would be a statue of me. I'm very proud and very honoured."

"For anybody that's getting their picture with that statue, a lot of my friends would say that this statue has gotten a lot more personality that I have", he also joked.

McCoy was the leading jockey at two Cheltenham Festivals, and won 31 races during his career at the Festival, including two Gold Cups.

He won the feature race on board Mr Mulligan in 1997 and Synchronised 15 years later.
