Angelique Kerber defeated Serena Williams 6-4 3-6 6-4 to become the Australian Open Women's Champion for the first time at Merblourne Park. It is the German tennis player's first Grand Slam at the age of 28.

It was 7th seeded Kerber's first Grand Slam final and did not let the occasion get to her against such a formidable opponent in Serena Williams at Melbourne Park.

It was Williams' 26th Grand Slam final and had won 21 of 25 heading into the match against Kerber. Kerber becomes the first German to win a Grand Slam singles title this century - Steffi Graf being the last in 1999 - and is now ranked number two in the world behind Serena Williams.

The German had defeated Misaki Doi, Alexandra Dulgheru, Madison Brengle, Annika Beck, Victoria Azarenka and Johanna Konta on her way to the final.
