Last year's Australian Open beaten finalist, Andy Murray, has admitted he would leave the competition if his wife, Kim, went into early labour during the tournament.

Murray has had an exceptional year making it to the Australian Open and French Open finals before leading Britain to victory in the Davis Cup. He returns to England on Sunday and remains favourite for the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year award.

The tennis supremo admits he would forego the chance of winning the first tournament of the year, “I’d go home. For sure, yes. It’s obviously important. I want to make sure at the beginning I’m there as much as I can be to try and help out, just be there for whatever is really required of me.”

The tournament does not begin until the 18th of January but Murray has already decided what he would do if decision time should arise. The World No.2 also admitted that his pre-season plans have been decided by the logistics surrounding his travel back and forth to be with his heavily pregnant wife.

“I was either going to go to Dubai or Miami but because obviously Kim is quite heavily pregnant it’s a lot easier to get back from here,” he added. “All the flights leave in the evening from Miami, whereas here you can fly at all times in the day.”
