Former WBO middleweight champion Andy Lee says boxing is not taking the doping seriously. Lee also says he believes there is a huge problem with doping in the sport.

The former boxer joined Joe Molloy on Tuesday's OTB

“The only fight I was properly tested for the was the Quinllan fight, and that’s because we paid for that ourselves out of our own purses’, to have proper random testing done,’ said Lee.

The former middleweight says the major problem putting testing in place is the financial costs associated with testing and the vast array of governing bodies in professional boxing.

Lee confirmed he was only tested properly once in his career. The Limerick man says both he and Quillan had to take money from their own purses in order to pay for the testing.

“It’s because there are different governing bodies, and there’s no one to pay for it, really. I was never tested as a professional boxer, never; never randomly tested.”

The former Limerick fighter believes fighters can do what they want. He says there may be huge consequences down the line for the sport, especially in lower level fights where fighters aren’t tested after their bouts.

"You can do what you want. Ok, at Championship level you get tested after fights, you should do. And I did after high level pro fights. Not only that, the times I was fighting guys who were like journeymen. I was never tested, and they were never tested. That’s the most dangerous because one fighter has such an advantage, already. If they are doping, or on any substance, the damage could be fatal.”

You can listen to the full interview from this evening's OTB - Lee also weigh-in on Carl Frampton's performance last weekend, Katie Taylor and Amir Khan.
