When Arsenal signed Mesut Ozil in the summer it provided a confidence boost which in its own small way has helped propel the Gunners to the top of the Premier League.

Manchester United will have their fingers crossed that Juan Mata can have a similar impact, if and when the playmaker finalizes a move from Chelsea.

Tonight we were joined by United We Stand editor Andy Mitten who took us inside the deal.

"Readers of United We Stand would have known 24 hours ago that Manchester United thought they could get the deal done. My position has not changed on that and I was told by a very good source that United were exceptionally confident that the deal was done," said Mitten.

"He's needed. The team's deficiencies have been clear throughout the season. This is likely to be Manchester United's record transfer and as I understand, it is £40 million. I also understand that United hope to unveil him tomorrow."

He told us that the club had watched over 40 players and that although Mata was not an original target, circumstances have seduced David Moyes and the hierarchy.

"United really needed to bring someone in. They've been watching a lot of players. They've watched over 40 players this season all around Europe but the Mata situation has grown on them. I don't think he was United's No 1, No 2 or No 3 target at the start of this season. But circumstances have led to that. Juan Mata is clearly a talented player who wants to be playing every week and for Spain in the World Cup. Manchester United are hugely attractive to most footballers. It all adds up and suits all parties."

Mitten also added that according to available information, there is no talk of Wayne Rooney leaving and PSG have not made a rival bid for Mata.

The United bid for Mata was initially made through a third party and Mitten reckons that an agent may look to get involved, citing the example of the failed Ander Herrera chase.

"It has been known for agents to make cuts along the way. When I interviewed [Man United chief executive] Ed Woodward, he told me that seven different agents had tried to insert themselves into the potential Ander Herrera deal in the 24 hours before it collapsed."

But where will Mata fit in if he does complete the move?

Mitten believes the price tag means Mata could line up in the central role behind the main striker.

"While Wayne Rooney's out, he'll go in the hole behind the striker. If Van Persie is still out when Rooney comes back, then he'll stay in the same position. He can play on the wing and David Moyes has a lot of options."
