Sensationally, USA's former star player, Landon Donovan, was left off the World Cup roster this year by coach Jurgen Klinsmann.
The three-time World Cup veteran had achieved much for his country and is the leading scorer in U.S. soccer history with a record 57 goals.
So it was no surprise that when Donovan was cut from the team, fans were outraged and shocked at the decision made by Klinsmann.
Klinsmann gave no reason for cutting Donovan from the roster but it looks as if Klinsmann was looking for a younger team.
18-year-old Julian Green earned a spot on the roster along with 23-year-old Aron Johannsson. Donovan is now 32 and some critiques believe him to be out of shape and losing his pace.
Donovan and Klinsmann have not always seen eye to eye and when Klinsmann came to be head coach of the U.S. team Donovan took a “break” from his soccer career.
Klinsmann declares that cutting Donovan is nothing personal and is very happy with the outcome of the roster.
Donovan has kept a positive attitude throughout this hard time and still believes that the United States of America can win the World Cup.
In a recent interview Donovan is still confident in the team Klinsmann has selected, “We believe that we will win. That’s the way Americans think. That’s the sentiment.”
He recently made a comical video capturing what it will be like watching the World Cup from home for the first time since 1998.
Donovan will not be sitting out the World Cup entirely. ESPN has offered Donovan a spot as a commentator for World Cup coverage and although he will not be traveling to Brazil, he will be broadcasting from ESPN’s studio in Los Angeles.
At least Donovan’s teammates are happy that he has the opportunity to stay involved with the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
