Alcides Ghiggia, the Uruguayan who scored the winning goal to defeat Brazil in 1950 to win the World Cup has died, aged 88.

Ghiggia's goal has entered football folklore as Uruguay shocked Brazil to win the World Cup in the Maracana on front of over 170,000 fans. He scored the winning goal 13 minutes from time.

Speaking at last years World Cup, Ghiggia said; "There was complete silence. The crowd was frozen still . It was like they weren't even breathing.They couldn't even raise their voices to cheer on Brazil. That was when I realised they weren't going to do it and that we'd won."

He only played 12 times for his country and scored four goals, all of which came in the 1950 World Cup.

Ghiggia was the last surviving member of Uruguay's 1950 World Cup winning side.
