Alan Hansen has announced his decision to leave 'Match of the Day' after more than 20 years as a pundit on the long-running BBC show.

The 58-year-old will quit at the end of this season after the 2014 World Cup.

The former Liverpool defender said: "I will have been there for 22 years and will be 59, so it's the right time for me. I am contracted to do the World Cup and I will do that as it will be a good way to go out, but I have had a great run.

He is famous for once remarking that "you can't win anything with kids" when referring to Alex Ferguson's Manchester United team at the cusp of the 1995-96 season. The Reds would go on to win the Premier League title and FA Cup double that season.

His time on Match of The Day was not without controversy. During a 1994 World Cup match between Argentina and Romania, he commented that "the Argentine defender warrants shooting for a mistake like that", about 10 days after Colombian defender Andres Escobar was shot dead.
