Fast bowler Sean Abbott took two wickets as he returned to first-class cricket for the first time since bowling the ball that led to Phillip Hughes' tragic death.

Hughes was struck on the neck by a short delivery from the New South Wales paceman last month during a domestic match at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Abbott sent down a bouncer in his first over this morning at the SCG, and finished with figures of 2 for 54.

Meanwhile, Australia batsman David Warner's paid his own tribute to Hughes with a sparkling century on the opening day of the first Test with India. The match in Adelaide is the first international since Hughes' death.

Warner was playing in the same match that saw his South Australia team-mate fatally struck on the neck.

Warner said that playing today was an emotional occasion.
