Manchester City closed the gap on league leaders Chelsea with a 2-0 win over Hull City this afternoon, but the game could have turned into a disaster for Manuel Pellegrini’s side following Vincent Kompany’s 10th minute red card.

The City captain was shown a straight red after he hauled down Hull striker Nikica Jelavic when the Croatian was through on goal. The prospect of facing in 80 minutes away from home a man down and lacking their captain was quickly made more bearable by a sweetly struck David Silva goal.

The Spaniard curled a beautiful strike into the top corner, from outside the area, on 14 minutes to quickly halt any ambitions Hull had of taking a quick stranglehold on the game due to their numerical advantage. As if to emphasise that point Pablo Zabaleta hit the bar shortly after.

Hull’s advantage showed as they enjoyed a sizeable chunk of the possession but it was to amount to nothing as City wrapped up the win late on with an Edin Dzeko goal.

City close the gap on Chelsea to 6 points, with 2 games in hand, while Hull remain in 14th.
