From prehistoric cave art to today’s social media feeds, to design is to be human. On this week's show, designer Debbie Millman guides us through a world made and remade—and helps us design our own paths.

Host Manoush Zomorodi and designer Debbie Millman describe how humans have been trying to communicate through art and symbols for thousands of years. From cave paintings to religious symbols, we have essentially been using forms of branding to communicate.

Debbie Millman continues our conversation about branding, and how over time, symbols shifted into actual logos of companies, used to communicate values and ideals. Debbie also describes how she teaches students to design their own lives through a TED Talk on happiness by Dan Gilbert.

We end our conversation with Debbie Millman with a look at designer Marian Bantjes, who has created her own path in design by pursuing her passions. Debbie describes the balance between mastering your craft, accepting the restrictions that come with having to carve out a livelihood, and finding ways to pursue your passion.
