Clones in Monaghan is a small town with a population of some 1,680 people, but a century ago this week its name was appearing in the international press as the ‘Clones Affray’ made headlines.

In the days of the confusing new Irish border, a firefight in a train station left several dead leading to severe rioting elsewhere.

But what were the circumstances that led to these events?
