Because of his 'black' father, Thomas always viewed himself as black. In line with the 'one drop rule' which dictates anyone with a drop of 'black blood' is black. But, as the father of two 'white' looking children he began to question that concept. Thomas Chatterton Williams, author of ‘Self-Portrait in Black and White: Unlearning Race’ spoke to us about his issues with race as a concept.
