The dark art of “sledging”, that being the particularly forceful verbal abuse of opponents on the sporting field, has been gaining a lot of press recently due to the departure of Jonathan Trott from the Ashes series in Australia, due to a “stress related” illness. Australia’s David Warner has been heavily chastised by the English side for his verbal abuse of Trott during the first test and has admitted since that he crossed the line.
Sledging certainly isn’t confined to cricket, however, and this week’s panel of Anthony Moyles, former Meath gaelic footballer, Conor Deegan, All-Ireland winner with Down, and Frank McNally of the Irish times, discussed the concept, its effects and when it crosses the line from an acceptable means of gaining a sporting edge to something deeper and more offensive.
Before the talk of sledging however talk turned to the power of Dublin GAA, and if the capital should be forced to divide into two separate sides or share its financial might with smaller counties in the interests of levelling the playing field in gaelic football.
